Babe Ruth or Lou Gehrig?

Who was the better Yankees player?

reply

Ruth.

Gehrig is the sentimental favorite because he was cultured, learned, and classy to the end. The Babe was a bull in a China shop his whole life.

There were years Ruth hit more home runs than most teams hit combined. Ruth also was a HOF quality pitcher before he became an everyday position player.

Here's an interesting fact: While everyone knows Ruth pretty much stopped pitching when he was traded (sold) to the Yankees in 1920, most folks don't know that he made one start in 1930 at age 35 and one start in 1933 at age 38, won both of those games and both were complete games.

Babe Ruth.

No disrespect to Lou Gehrig. He was a great Yankees player.

Babe Ruth was arguably the best pitcher of the 1910s. He set a record of pitching 29 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings that lasted until 1961.

Before he was traded to the Yankees Boston noticed he was a great hitter. So he would play right field one day and pitch the next.

Since you said "Yankees Player" it is worth noting that he had been transformed into an offensive player when Boston traded him. Still his pitching excellence is worth noting. Babe was an outstanding defensive outfielder who could throw powerful and precise throws from deep in right field.

Babe Ruth had a six year run- from 1926 to 1932- where he hit more home runs each season than some teams were hitting. 1927 was the year he hit 60 and the 1927 Yankees and "Murderers Row" were legendary.
