Why does he play so many British characters?

I recall seeing him play a British officer in "Turn", and he's now on "The Peripheral", in which he plays an English crime dude. However, I noticed he was born in Colorado. I am under the impression that there are a lot of good British actors available, so I wonder why they pick an American to play British roles.
