RIP: Screenwriter and film director dies aged 77

One of the great contemporary British filmmakers, a visual poet, and still working so recently that this has come as a true shock. I’m happy that his last film, ‘Benediction’, was such a remarkable achievement, up there with his very best, but this is a truly saddening loss.
