WTF robert what happened to you, man?????

reprisal of an old open letter i posted on imdb in 2012:

i am disappointed in robert.

he was the coolest, and had it all in his hands, then threw it away with sky kids and shark boy and that junk. plus, the turd film in the mariachi trilogy was awful. b68 the first two were brilliant.

i dunno how to say it, but it seems like he doesn't care about movies the way he did. his CHOICES he makes are lame.

robert could totally RULE the action genre, like a mexican luc besson or john woo, but he wants to put machete in outer space? COMEON DUDE WHAT ARE YOU SMOKING??? we don't care about that stupid stuff.

this is the reason i watch layer cake three times a week; it is a real gangster film, with a great story and totally gorgeous in the way it is shot. the brit gangster genre in general is beating the americans. american crime/action films have taken a dive in the last decade.

but i digress.

rodriguez made totally cool movies in the beginning.

MARIACHI
ROADRACERS
DESPERADO
DUSK TILL DAWN

IMO that is where he went off the tracks, after that.

then when he returned to action, he gave us that piece of cr@p once upon a time... lol what a JOAK that was. (then he brags in the commentary that he shot the whole thing in two weeks, or something like that. as if the only goal in making that film was to get sony off his back and fulfill that last contract. he didn't seem to care if he made the fans happy)

and as far as i am concerned he made nothing in the 2000s worth watching except for sin city. i liked sin city. good story, well done. grindhouse was lame, boring. machete was okay but not great. i liked predators a lot. (but he didn't direct those, so it's a dubious compliment.) machete and predators both 'kinda' feel like the old rodriguez films used to. sorta. but that could be a fluke, b/c i saw that machete space thing on his list. (just crazy)

here is a letter i would give to robert, if i could:

I wonder sometimes, robert, what do you do all day? walk around the 'pad' there in austin, being bored? what goes through your mind when you are thinking your fans WANT shark boy and machete in space? dude, did you FORGET that you are robert rodriguez, the one who made the masterpiece desperado? those stories, those stunts, use of music, are why we became fans in the first place. have you run out of ideas? did you change into someone who does not like action movies? do you not find FUN in desperado-type movies anymore? dude if i were you i'd make one a year, every year. if you did that you'd totally rule, no OWN, the category. EVERYONE would know you were the king. but it seems like you don't care. (i can infer that by reading into your decisions)

okay look, robert. i know that whole thing with rose had your head all f__ked up..... but let go man, embrace your real self. come back to us. GO TO THE LIGHT, ROBERTO, GO TO THE LIGHT (lol)

ah well, you will probably not read this anyway. but at least some fans will see it, and either agree or not. i suspect that some of your newer fans w 5b4 weren't there for the whole ride like i was. i saw desperado in the theater in 95, and have followed you ever since.

I thought Alita: Battle Angel was good.

honestly i haven't seen that one. i have heard it's good.

this post is ten years old so really i was addressing his period form around 2000 to 2012

The last five to ten minutes suck but the rest of the movie is awesome. Despite not liking the ending, I would love a sequel.

thanks. i will check it out.
