Why Hollywood won't cast Renee Zellweger anymore

By the early 2000s, Renee Zellweger was a serious star. She dazzled us in Chicago, put in two pitch-perfect performances as Bridget Jones, scored an Oscar for Cold Mountain, and turned "You had me at hello" into one of the most quotable lines of all time. But instead of continuing on to ever-greater success, she dropped almost completely off the radar. Why haven't we seen Zellweger onscreen as much lately?

She was pretty attractive in the first Bridget Jones movie but then she lost far too much weight and ruined her face with plastic surgery. Same with Uma Thurman.

She doesn't look like herself anymore. It's amazing how much one tiny eyelid operation can change a person's appearance. But I'm getting used to her new look, and hopefully other people will too.

Her box office was never impressive and it just kept dropping - Outside of Chicago (where she was part of an ensemble), Shark Tales (again an ensemble) and the Bridget Jones series of films, Zellweger’s box office returns haven’t been very impressive. If you don’t make money, you don’t get interest.

She’s 50 - As I have noted in several other answers, Hollywood is a particularly cruel place for women over 40. Zellweger’s primary appeal has always been her appearance and after 40 that has to be exceptional for an actor depending upon it to keep hitting. Her’s frankly isn’t.

Her appearance - Zellweger has denied having extensive plastic surgery, but cannot explain why she looks somewhat different and how she has managed to avoid the wrinkles and sagging skin that are commonplace in people her age. As you can see by the photos below she clearly had several procedures and that’s altered her appearance to the point where she’s unrecognizable. That definitely didn’t help her career.

Her limited range - While Zellweger has been effective in romantic comedy, she’s really not done very well elsewhere. If she had done some stagework to improve her skill sets, things might have gone differently. She didn’t and now she’s essentially typecast as a “short, moderately funny blond”.

She took six years off - For reasons not explained clearly, she took six years during the high point of her career. While that may have been cathartic for her, it may have seriously compromised her future as a performer. During the six years that she was away, other younger performers took her place and she’s yet to seize it back.
