How would one describe the melodramatic music used in silent films?

I was just watching a movie from 1951 and the accompanying music was similar to the melodramatic music used in early films, especially silent films.

What word would one use to describe this type of music that accompanies films like this?

Article really doesn't state a genre, instead speaks broadly of classical and contemporary music. So I think one would do what you did, just say "melodramatic music." Makes me think of the villain tying up the girl on the railroad tracks.
