Nyctc7 wins with Chiune Sugihara, Japanese diplomat who, as Vice-Consul of Japan in Lithuania, saved over 5,000 Jews from the looming danger of the Nazis by granting them transit visas to the Japanese Empire even though most of them didn’t meet the qualifications. For breaking the rules he was later quietly removed from the diplomatic service and spent most of his remaining life in obscurity until the 1980s when he was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations for his role in rescuing Jews from the Holocaust.

Chiune Sugihara?

reply

That's the one!

reply

See, almost everybody pretty much gave up when I said he was Japanese and a political figure but not a prime minister, but all it took was a few simple questions to identify what he was famous for and then figure out who he was.

reply

Reading his story on Wikipedia brought tears to my eyes.

It is a remarkable story.

"According to witnesses, he was still writing visas while in transit from his hotel and after boarding the train at the Kaunas Railway Station, throwing visas into the crowd of desperate refugees out of the train's window even as the train pulled out.

In final desperation, blank sheets of paper with only the consulate seal and his signature (that could be later written over into a visa) were hurriedly prepared and flung out from the train. As he prepared to depart, he said, "Please forgive me. I cannot write anymore. I wish you the best." When he bowed deeply to the people before him, someone exclaimed, "Sugihara. We'll never forget you. I'll surely see you again!"[10]"
