Boromir's guess the famous game #318 [Umm Kulthum is the famous person, cyberbob wins!]

1. I'm thinking of some famous figure, it can be a philosopher, politician, entertainer, scientist, fictional character, criminal, animal, being, etc.
2. You need to ask me a yes or no question about this person, for example, "Is the person still alive?," "Does the person work in the entertainment industry?," any question you can think of that helps you to reveal the answer. The host answers with yes or no only.
3. Maximum 1 question and 2 guesses per player per answer.
4. The winner can either start a new game or say "pass." In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another.
5. Can't edit a question or guess once posted. Delete ONLY.

Cyberbob wins with Umm Kulthum, widely considered one of the greatest singers, if not the greatest, in the history of Egyptian and Arabic music. In her lifetime she was called the Voice of Egypt and the Star of the East. Gamal Abdel Nasser himself respected her so much that he would schedule his speeches in such a way as not to interfere with her radio performances. She was an integral part of Egypt’s cultural boom in the mid-20th century, placing Egypt at the cultural center of the Arab world. Even though I can’t understand much Arabic, I personally find her music extremely peaceful and relaxing to listen to.

To be honest I'm kinda surprised only one person was playing by the end. Though she's most known in the Arab world, I would have thought she's famous enough in general that people would have a good chance of getting her fairly easily. We even have a player here who lives in the Middle East, right in her neighborhood, who didn't think of her.

Anyway I hope that at least one or two people here will get curious enough to check out her music. You don't need to speak Arabic (as I don't; I only know a handful of basic words) to appreciate it.

I think most people here are Americans. I'm American and hadn't heard of her at all, though I'm listening to her music right now and it's very good

Most Americans don't get nearly enough exposure to non-Western art, but there are some smart cookies on here. I think somebody would have guessed it before me if it had been narrowed down some more

reply

Indeed. Well, I'm not being salty or anything; I just thought she's pretty well-known. Probably outside of the Arab world, she's the most well-known Arab singer. Charles De Gaulle was even a fan. Of course that was during her lifetime; she died in 1975.

Well, part of what I like about these games here is trying to raise awareness of people and things that some might not be aware of, giving people the chance to experience or learn something new. I'm glad you like her music! I personally find it soothing. I'm recovering from sickness at the moment and I find that listening to her music helps me feel better, which is why I decided to use her today.

reply

Yeah, I like playing the game for that reason as well. I've always been a trivia geek and I enjoy learning about new important figures

Yeah, I've only really been exposed to arabic music in movies lol, but I like this. I hope you feel better from your sickness soon

Thanks. :)

You don't mistaken, she is very well-known Kawada_Kira, especially in the middle east but also around the worlds, not only Arabs I know many Jewish who love listen to her. The only reason I didn't used her is because I know you will used her some day. I think about her almost immediately, this is why I asked if she is a singer.

So you ask how I didn't guess her? I made a stupid mistake, I look at the Hebrew Wikipedia and their they said she born in 1898 (Q8), also I swear I thought I saw the same thing written on the English Wikipedia. I didn't know any other white female singer in Africa and it was late so I go to sleep.
Today I saw they write 1898 or 1904 (I miss that). 🤦‍♂️

By the way, 1904 is an approximate year, there really is a debate about her year of birth.

reply

Oh wow, that's interesting. I didn't know that about the disputed birth date. Sorry for the confusion.

Btw I wasn't ragging on you; I was just mildly surprised you didn't get her. I see why now though.

"The only reason I didn't used her is because I know you will used her some day."

Oh wow really? I'm definitely surprised on that one, since I don't usually discuss music here very much and I've never mentioned Umm Kulthum on this site before. Some of you guys seem to have an almost supernatural ability to read me lol.

reply

I know you wasn't ragging on me or anyone else, I just wanted to said she is famous around the world. Who know maybe nyctc7, Laura and others heard about her. Her status is almost mythical.

And of course it is my mistake (1) We always used the English Wikipedia as the main source (also IMDb said 1904); (2) Even in the Hebrew they said 1898 or 1904, I just didn't seen the last one.

Out of curiosity I now checked Arabic Wikipedia and they written December 31 1898. So I wonder who is right?

reply

Here's a funny thing. The English Wikipedia page doesn't mention the debate over her birth date. But up at the top it gives her birth date as 1904, and yet down at the bottom, in the "categories" section, it has her in "1898 births".

reply

Another funny one. On Japanese Wikipedia, it says 1904 in the main text but in the infobox on the right it says 1898.
