Anyone remember Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future?

I started an earlier thread about toys you owned as a kid. Some people responded about their toys from the 80s.

That reminded me of a toy that I bought for my younger brother. It was a line of toys that was tied into some sort of kids' sci-fi show on one of the networks. I think it was called Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future, but I'm not sure. (Looked it up on youtube...)

The toys had sensors built into them. During the show, a light would flash on screen... it was built into the special effects of the story. I think it was usually the exhaust of some X-Wing Fighter type craft.

What you would do was point your toy at the flashing light. The toy detected the flashing light, and that would bring the toy to 'life' in your living room with lights and sounds. You could then be part of the action happening on the screen.

It was a pretty cool concept and it worked well. I remember my cat would be drawn to the TV whenever the flashing lights appeared and would watch the fighters flying around. She would even press her head up against the screen to see where they went when they flew off one edge of the screen.

You'd think something that sophisticated would be updated and started again for a new generation of kids.

Is that the toy line that had a six-legged dinosaur? It had a red marker at it's neck. if it was walking and you hit it with a light it would stop. Hit it again and it starts walking again. Sticks in my head because that was the only toy in the entire line that I ever got.

I don't think so. The toys I'm talking only reacted to the special flashing spots on the TV screen. AFAIK, they didn't react to anything else.

That's definitely not what I'm thinking of. Sorry

I remember it. It was written and created by J Michael Strazynski who went on to create Babylon 5.

It was very typical 80s kids sci fi tv stuff, with the added interactive element as you mentioned.
