amazon prime users in canada - do you recommend it?

i'm considering dumping netflix, at least for a year or so, and switching over to amazon prime. i'm not unhappy with netflix, but i thought it might be worth switching things up for a spell, just for a little variety.

i already subscribe to shudder & criterion, and having a fourth subscription seems just a bit too much, particularly since i frequently use free sites (tubi, hoopla, kanopy).

i gave prime a free trial a few years back, and decided not to keep the service at that time. i didn't find enough worthy things on it to warrant a subscription, but i'm willing to give it another go. perhaps its catalogue has improved.

are there any prime users from canada here? would you recommend it? do you think it would work as an adequate replacement for netflix?

reply

Canadian, eh?
The Suzuki part of your handle always made me figure Asia
That makes at least five prominent posters from Canada!

Sslssg, Hownos, Allaby, Stonekeeper and yourself...probably some others as well

I can't answer your question as I'm in New York but I do love Amazon Prime
Their catalogue includes lots of obscure 70s and 80s horror and exploitation stuff
They do have a terrible habit of stocking up on edited versions of movies so be sure to check the run time every time

Free shipping on most items too, all for about $100 a year!

thanks. it's that horror/exploitation element that really makes me want to make the switch. netflix's catalogue is thoroughly lacking in that part - and lacking in classics in general.

i don't really buy a lot (i'm a low-impact anti-materialist, i guess you'd call it), but i'm likely going to be in the market for a laptop and a soundbar at some point in the new year, so free shipping might be a nice perk.

I use Amazon Prime in Canada and I would definitely recommend it. They have a pretty good mix of newer popular films and older obscure films.

reply

thanks for the feedback - appreciated.

We have Amazon Prime. I like it. The horror selection is much better than Netflix and you can also add Shudder if you want.

Because you are looking at the horror, have you looked at Tubi? That has a lot of horror as well and is free. Hownos suggested it I think and I was pretty impressed with the Canadian selection.

reply

thanks. i'll probably make the switch january 1st.

i do have a shudder subscription & i use tubtv all the time. in fact, i'm watching 'the wailing,' one of my favourite korean films of recent years, on tubi right now. it's also streaming on shudder, but i find the streams i get on tubi actually look better & are less prone to stutters and hiccups.

reply

That's why I don't have Shudder any more. I thought of trying it through Prime to see if it streamed better but I'm quite happy with the horror selections on Prime and Tubi.

reply

I go back and forth between the two but Netflix is better especially the TV series I like - crime and thrillers.

reply

that's one of the things that makes me think i'd probably be better off with prime: i don't really watch series at all.

however, i do really like bojack horseman, and would definitely want to watch the 1/2 season that is coming at the end of january, so i'll hang on to netflix until that gets added & i have a chance to watch it, rather than jettisoning it on the 1st as i said above.
