Exploitation Films: 3. Giallo

This is the Wiki definition of an exploitation film: An exploitation film is a film that attempts to succeed financially by exploiting current trends, niche genres, or lurid content. Exploitation films are generally low-quality "B movies".They sometimes attract critical attention and cult followings.

Since we’ve been doing lots of fun list here lately, and you find out about so many movies you might have missed, I thought we might try different genres of exploitation films. For the 3rd genre lets try Giallo films. Giallo films are Italian-made slasher - mystery films that focus on cruel murders and the subsequent search for the killers. Often the killer is gloved and their identity is not revealed until the end.

Let’s start out with your five favorites.

Mine:

1. Deep Red (1975)
2. Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970)
3. Spasmo (1974)
4. All the Colors of the Dark (1972)
5. Don’t Torture a Duckling (1972)

reply

& because i have so much cross-over with your list, i'll add a few more:

the red queen kills seven times
death walks on high heels
death walks at midnight
the bloodstained shadow
death laid an egg

1. Tenebrae (1982)
2. The House of the Laughing Windows (1976)
3. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970)
4. The Case of the Scorpion's Tail (1971)
5. Seven Blood-Stained Orchids (1972) & Trauma (1993) & A Blade in the Dark (1983) - all tied!

reply

I do love Tenebrae and had I should have placed it in my top 5 too.

reply

That's ok! We have so many brilliant giallo films. It's hard to choose just 5. I'm a bit biased because Tenebrae is usually overshadowed by other Argento films like Suspiria, Deep Red or even The Bird with the Crystal Plumage. That's why I always try to defend Tenebrae. Anyway, it's still my favorite Dario film.

reply

I really like John Saxon in it too. He always adds so much to every Italian production he’s in. Do you like the Poliziotteschi crime films also?

reply

I'm more into giallos but I love some Poliziotteschi films very much: Dirty Harry, The French Connection, Magnum Force, Serpico, Almost Human

reply

Most of the Giallo films’s pages here don’t receive many comments so I looked at Tenebrae’s thread and the last post was 3 years ago. We should start doing some commenting and see if others are interested.

fyi, a giallo that i'd never heard of was added to tubitv today - 'blood and black lace' from 1964. i know nothing about it, but it looks promising.

I haven’t seen that one either but it’s directed by Mario Bava and I usually like all of his films. Also check out his son Lamberto’s filmography.

It's a great movie which inspired the whole slasher/giallo genres. Mario Bava did a fantastic job

reply

thanks! i'm just about to hit play on it.
