On netflix, at least, i'm finding what seems to be a pattern.
A non-english production will offer 5,6 even language audio choices, but exclude english. only sub-titles.
I understand we are philistines & ethnocentric, all of that, but find myself baffled by this decision, since english is sort of the modern lingua franca.

don't know. if someone is bothering to dub a movie in 5 languages, why wouldn't one be english? seems like a reasonable expectation.
shareI have no idea why. Maybe it's done that way so the film being viewed is enjoyed in its original setting, adding authenticity and providing cultural context that would be lost in a dub. It could be a practical reason like Netflix simply not wanting to pay the money to add that feature. Maybe the foreign films would lose their mystic among English speakers who might see a different language as exotic and attractive (considering how common English is spoken). Many of those dubbed Japanese films come off as unintentionally funny a lot of times, like the Godzilla adaptions, becoming memes in the process.

shareno, I find that extremely unlikely. a culture that makes films is a culture that values its language, i would think.
