I'm from Melbourne, Australia and I have never met anyone from Ireland. Plenty of people from England, Scotland, America and Canada but no Irish. And the surprising thing about that is that in the late 1800's one third of Melbourne's population was Irish !
I'm in Geelong and have met plenty. Can't believe you haven't!
shareActually now I think of it when I was a boy one of our parish priests was Irish but apart from that nothing. But then I am not a pub going Guinness drinker and I have only ever driven through Geelong which is pretty Catholic from what I've heard.
I wasn't aware we were perceived as being particularly Catholic. I was brought up atheist. My mother denounced Catholicism.
shareMaybe Geelong as Catholic is more of a past tense thing. Your mother and many others denounced it once the lid was lifted.
I was just reading up about us on Wikipedia. Apparently we have the largest Croatian community in Australia and they're predominantly Catholic.
