Car rental frustration

So I'm trying to find out rates, what kind of car I need, etc for a cross-country trip.

You'd think this would be easy enough, especially given the fact that we're able (in THEORY) to investigate things like this online, and to call local dealerships, but no.

Thus far I've called two of the major chains who have locations here, and although both claim to be open until 6:00 PM, and it was only 4:00 PM when i started calling, before peak hours of this holiday weekend, NEITHER of them have answered to answer my questions!

BOTH said they were closed, and to call back during normal business hours, even those this is WELL BEFORE normal business hours. I've never before countered this, and now have no idea what their actual business hours are, because they're not what they state they are.

Has anyone else here encountered this, and have any suggestions of what to do?

This is my first time renting a car, first time making a long-distance trip, too. It never occurred to me that a company would state they were open from X to X, and not be. Let alone TWO of them, on which many people depend.

Make certain that you are allowed to take the car through all the states you plan to visit. Some rental locations have limitations on where you can take their cars.

reply

Jeebus, that never occurred to me. I assumed all rentals within the States would allow people to drive through any state in the US.

Another question to ask IF I CAN EVER GET THROUGH TO THEM WHEN THEY CLAIM TO BE OPEN.

You'd think this would be simple and easy, except on holiday type of weekends. Knowing this was one, I figured they wouldn't be very busy on an early afternoon before the end of the holiday weekend.

Now I have no idea when they actually DO close, as it's obviously not when they state they do.

You could try the main 800 number for the larger agencies. Those call centers are usually 24/7.

reply

Could do, but the call centers are most likely in New Delhi this time of night, and the people answering having little idea of the correct answers.

Thank you for your suggestions though, Texas. My best move looks to be waiting until tomorrow to call, and hoping they'll answer!

Also, you almost certainly will not need the insurance that they always try to sell you. You normally have coverage through your own car insurance, the credit card you use for the rental, or both:

Thanks for this! Apparently you have to charge it ALL on your credit card, and restrictions apply, blah blah blah.

Everything has to be so effing complicated now, it's nuts! Everyone wants a loophole to escape out of and you practically need to be an attorney to read and understand everyday things you're supposed to understand and agree to.

Sometimes I HATE this brave new world we're in.

reply

Just called my credit card company to make sure I'm covered, and yes, I am!

This was a huge help. Thanks so much, Texas!

reply

Glad to help. Happy trails!
