You've got two weeks to back-up your posts and share contact details with weird strangers over the Internet before we pull your post but not your votes or contributions to the site.

I find that life is so ironic. We grow up with our parents telling us to never talk to strangers and yet, what happens? We end up talking to strangers. These strangers become our friends and the opposite sex strangers (not always the case now) end up being our boyfriend/girlfriend and our future life partners. It all starts from breaking away from what our parents once told us.

So whenever I see that we share personal details with strangers, I always go back to "what exactly is a stranger?" At some point, your life and everyone's lives for that matter, revolve around meeting a stranger and that is really the only way one can get around.

Imagine submitting your resume for a job. Are you afraid to submit personal details (that businesses specifically want, SSN!), so you can get that job?

If people actually followed the "do not talk to nor write to strangers", where would we all be? We would probably have relationships with our family (gross right?) and/or work for family owned businesses (which does not seem bad); however, nothing would be sold because we are not allowed to write nor talk to strangers.

So every time you think about strangers, just think about what life would really be like.

My parents never warned me not to talk to strangers.

Considering your train of thought, it would be better if parents said to children: don't talk to strangers until you are a grown-up. But that would go over child's head.

It would definitely be a tough way to explain.

Or maybe like "Only talk to people your own age."

I do not think "grown-up" is too far' fetched for a child to understand. I mean there is a lot of mention on "What do you want to be when your grow up?" and the answer is one of only a limited amount, the first being president. Then we find, through the years, that actually a president pales in comparison to say an athlete, rockstar, actor, doctor, lawyer, and/or engineer.

Yeah, but when kids say "I wanna be a doctor when I grow up" they have no clue what they're talking about... it's just a distant idea in their heads.

When I see a child that says "I wanna study for years to become a doctor and work long hours and often two shifts in a row" I'll believe him that he knows what he's talking about lol

I remember, at my last job, when a physician came to my information desk and directly escorted a patient to where the operation was going to be done. Somehow, I wanted to know how many hours he worked and he told me, whenever the job is done. Me working 8 and half hours at my job had me winded, especially when the 30 minutes was for lunch. I cannot imagine anyone would want to be a doctor, after having to work for an undefined amount of time. I mean money galore, but it just sounds like it is a horrible job.

reply

Yeah. Or a nurse, they also work like crazy.

Thankfully kids don't know this yet, so some of them can be tricked to study medicine. Once they find out, it's too late. ;)

I think the only thing with those jobs is job security. I mean it is a pain to do, however, you are not as replaceable. The decision comes when you would rather pick being worked long hours for the sake of keeping your job. I cannot say that I would probably choose that, however, I would have to surrender my entire life to working. *sigh* I want to be a kid again and it's too late.

Another bad deal with being a doctor is when you are not at work, somewhere in a crowded place, and some person gets sick... there will always be someone asking "Is there a doctor here?"

So basically your job is never done. You never know when you might be needed.

We really hijacked this thread, maybe we should stop ;)

Not at all!

Please, continue - this is what discussion boards are all about :)

Well, we are not exactly trolling because it is something that stimulates a discussion. Also, we have received approval from the original poster. This is how a discussion evolves and even though it is very much tangential, it is definitely something to consider.

Getting back to that, yeah, there is no set number of hours. Then again, I have never been a salaried employee yet and I have heard those jobs are just as draining. Just recently, I think a law was passed for a minimum salary, however, I thought they too only worked 40 hours a week. Businesses were actually working people 50+ hours a week for a set salary? Insane! Then you have businesses that work people and force them to work overtime? WHAT?!
