PSA: You can access MovieChat boards from any IMDb page [NEW UPDATE]

All you need is a couple of scripts. Once installed, you'll be able to find message boards right where they used to be.

Desktop scripts (you need both of them):
Main script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29472
Companion script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29496

Mobile scripts (you need both of them):
Main script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/28263
Companion script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29391

How does it look?
Desktop: https://i.imgur.com/7fepxDh.png
Mobile: https://i.imgur.com/LviryWr.png

Wait, what is a 'script' anyway?
Think of it as a (usually) tiny browser extension, compatible with every browsers as long as you have a Script Manager.
I advice you to use Tampermonkey (https://tampermonkey.net/). If you're using anything else, like Greasemonkey (an infamous update broke every scripts installed a few months back), I can't help you.

Warning
If you're a desktop user who installed a script from this thread before the 05/05/17, I advice you to uninstall it/them and install the two first scripts I linked above! Thank you :-)

_____________________________

Known bugs:
1. Users can't stay logged in when they browse from IMDb.
Fix: You must allow MovieChat to use cookies in your browser settings.

2. The navbar (notification bell, etc.) doesn't appear within a thread.

If you have any question feel free to ask here. And if you want to thank the original creator of the main script, drhouse, you can do so here (https://redd.it/5w1uft) on Reddit!
For what it's worth, our codes look nothing alike now.

Enjoy guys ;-)

PS: So the bold tag is still broken, heh?

reply

Can someone pin this thread? If such a thing is possible at this point.

reply

I don't think it is, since none of Jim's threads are pinned.
But you found it so others will too, we shouldn't worry :-)

reply

Yes, but i first had to open a thread to ask if there was such a plugin for this website. No search function yet, that's why i'm asking about pinning. :)

reply

New update!

We can now remove the grey sidebars and also hide the movie description (you know, that thing that take way too much screen space).

All you have to do is install this new script https://greasyfork.org/fr/scripts/29391-moviechat-org-on-imdb-companion-script and you're done :-)

It looks like this now: https://i.imgur.com/3mmFjAa.jpg

reply

Looks better but needs to be even more streamlined and show just the posts.

reply

I could do that, but for those browsing on mobile it would fuck everything up.
I'll give it a shot anyway but it won't be the main version :-)

reply

So, what do you think of this: https://i.imgur.com/EmYZUtN.jpg? ;-)

reply

That looks much better. Would you be able to do it without the discuss/news tab?

reply

I could yeah, definitely.
Though I think some people might like it?

Just so you know, it doesn't appear on every board so I think it's a bug (not on my part).

We can get rid of it though, just edit the companion script and add:
$("ul.nav.nav-tabs").hide();
between line 55 and 56.

Or add a rule in your adBlocker (like uBlock Origin). As you wish.

Edit: You know what, I think I'm just gonna add it to the script, don't do anything.
Edit 2: Done ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ If you want to use it delete your previous scripts and download the new ones!

reply

Like the design for the companion script but I still can't get it to work after removing the other add ons. Anything else I should try?

reply

Be sure you also installed the main script, you need both of them:
Main script: https://goo.gl/scLXkj
Companion script: https://goo.gl/NTt4oY

It works on every devices I tried it on.

reply

How am I just finding out about this? Is it easy to do it?

reply

Super easy!

First you need a script manager, it's just a browser extension.
Chrome: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tampermonkey/dhdgffkkebhmkfjojejmpbldmpobfkfo
Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en/firefox/addon/greasemonkey/

Then you visit the first two links in my original post and click the big, friendly green "install this script" button.
You say "yes" or "ok" to anything it asks and once you've installed the 2 scripts, well you're done.

I have Grease Monkey and a script, now what do I have to do to make this thing work?

reply

Anybody know how to make this thing work?

reply

Can you be more specific? Maybe i can help.

reply

I have Grease Monkey on my browser, I downloaded a script but I don't know what to do with the script. Should I click on the script to open it?

reply

Now I have the script installed to Grease Monkey, went to IMDb and there is no board showing up. This isn't so easy.

reply

Download another script.

reply

Okay, thanks, it's working now. : )

reply

Glad i can help😉

reply

This is bringing back that familiar old IMDb feeling. I wonder if in the future it would be possible to make the window bigger to take up the entire bottom of the page? That would be my one minor suggestion.

reply

Well well, you kinda went crazy on this thread while I was away ;-)
Glad it works now!

So, making it wider isn't an option, 'cause it would break some pages (example: https://i.imgur.com/eUpsIgJ.jpg).
We could make it taller, but I don't really see the point? Is that what you want?

reply

No,it's good enough how it is now😉

reply

I didn't mean taller, I meant stretched wider. Right now, the name of the person who posted the thread can't be seen. As I said, just a minor complaint, otherwise it's very good and your work is greatly appreciated. : )

reply

On second thought, the ability to scroll further to the right using the slider would solve this. Is that possible?

reply

Sadly it isn't 'cause it would be really unconvenient to scroll left and right.

I get your point though, but I'm not the one who can "solve" this. Actually, Jim is. The way he designed MovieChat, under a certain width we can't see who posted what so it leaves more space to display the titles.

It's a design choice he made. There must be a way to work around it, but I'm pretty sure it would be a pain in the ass for me right now.

Edit: Nevermind, it was easier than I thought. I'm pushing an update.

reply

Great! Glad it won't be difficult. Thank you. : )

reply

Ok so your companion script should update itself in a few. If it doesn't you can force an update but basically, now it looks like this: https://i.imgur.com/0lU5gGx.png

I still need to center the 'Title' and 'Replies' divs. I'd also like 'Title' to be wider but I guess it's enough for tonight.

Edit: Even better https://i.imgur.com/xrHor4T.png

reply

Looks great! Now, I impatiently wait for my script to update itself.
; )

reply

Everything updated and looks great. It also updated twice afterwards but I don't know why. Were there more changes I'm not noticing?

reply

Some minor changes, I don't think anyone will notice.

But wait! Since yesterday I changed a bunch of things and it looks even better: https://i.imgur.com/7fepxDh.png

The thing is, I'm not using drhouse's script anymore and the other script to make the boards look as clear is a different one (the one you're currently using is now oriented mobile).

So now I can only advise you to uninstall the two scripts you're using and download the new ones :-)

reply

NEW UPDATE, PLEASE READ ME

So, if you were already using scripts from this page on your desktop, please uninstall them.
You now need the brand new scripts I linked in the OP.

It's annoying, I know, but once you're done everything will look so much better: https://i.imgur.com/7fepxDh.png :-)

reply

I installed the new version, but it doesn't work. The Moviechat boards are now gone from my IMDb pages. : (

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S87612I2eO8

reply

Since the new desk top script didn't work, I tried the mobile and that doesn't work either. How do I get the old ones that work back?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S87612I2eO8

reply

Easy there, just visit these 2 pages and install both scripts.
Main script: https://goo.gl/scLXkj
Companion script: https://goo.gl/NTt4oY

'Cause apparently you only installed the companion script, remove it again before installing both
scripts I linked above.

Just so you know, I tried it on 4/5 PC and 1 phone. It works.

reply

I installed both scripts correctly again and it still does NOT work. I know I installed both scripts correctly because IMDb is still "sectioned" as it was when the scripts worked but when I scroll all the way down, Moviechat isn't in the section anymore.

reply

Well try to reinstall the scripts you used before then, and tell me if it works.

Main script by drhouse: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/27617
Companion script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29391

reply

Okay, now that I have 1.7 back, it's working again. 1.81 does NOT work on my computer for some reason.

reply

That's really weird. I'm trying to recreate your problem but I just can't.

For what it's worth, you can try to remove the mobile companion script and install the desktop one (https://goo.gl/NTt4oY) instead, while keeping 1.7. You're not missing much.

reply

Maybe it's sounds silly, but have you read the instructions,i noticed that this program has a instruction manual in case of trouble.
