PSA: You can access MovieChat boards from any IMDb page [NEW UPDATE]

All you need is a couple of scripts. Once installed, you'll be able to find message boards right where they used to be.

Desktop scripts (you need both of them):
Main script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29472
Companion script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29496

Mobile scripts (you need both of them):
Main script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/28263
Companion script: https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/29391

How does it look?

Mobile: https://i.imgur.com/LviryWr.png

Wait, what is a 'script' anyway?
Think of it as a (usually) tiny browser extension, compatible with every browsers as long as you have a Script Manager.
I advice you to use Tampermonkey (https://tampermonkey.net/). If you're using anything else, like Greasemonkey (an infamous update broke every scripts installed a few months back), I can't help you.

Warning
If you're a desktop user who installed a script from this thread before the 05/05/17, I advice you to uninstall it/them and install the two first scripts I linked above! Thank you :-)

Known bugs:
1. Users can't stay logged in when they browse from IMDb.
Fix: You must allow MovieChat to use cookies in your browser settings.

2. The navbar (notification bell, etc.) doesn't appear within a thread.

If you have any question feel free to ask here. And if you want to thank the original creator of the main script, drhouse, you can do so here (https://redd.it/5w1uft) on Reddit!
For what it's worth, our codes look nothing alike now.

Enjoy guys ;-)

PS: So the bold tag is still broken, heh?

Are we allowed to BUMP? I've nothing to contribute to this thread, but want to keep it for reference later.

Nice work there, but I don't know. The only reason I would want to visit any page on their stupid site is to leave a rating and since we all deleted our accounts any rating we left wouldn't show up or count so I think we should only visit to archive content and troll them with poor reviews and leave 1-star ratings to hurt their most lucrative properties, under false usernames of course. I would rather see individual movie pages connect to boards here and continue to improve this site or if necessary see content moved from here to a site built with more sophisticated software, than to go back to the accursed site which should be left to wither and die.

If we do have reasons to go there, would we have to be logged into an account there to use the connected boards? Also, is there a way to block any indication of our presence so they receive no credit for any traffic from us? The sooner they choke and croak the better.

Nope, you only need to be connected on MovieChat if you want to participate. And if someone just wants to lurk, they don't need any account.

> Also, is there a way to block any indication of our presence so they receive no credit for any traffic from us?

Not that I know of.

This is GREAT...I'm not that tech savvy..but I managed to do it.. Makes IMDB look the same ..I enjoyed looking at user reviews and then browsing msg board threads beneath..(It was convenient) for more insight to a film..
Now it looks the same !!
Thanks Traveler

Is there any way to update it so that it only show the threads, and not the movie/actor information from MovieChat at the top?

reply

I'm pretty sure drhouse will when he'll find some time. It isn't a high priority since it's working :-)

Amazing! Thank you! :)

Can you tell me if this works on mobile?

reply

Just tried, it doesn't.

Mainly because www.imdb.com and m.imdb.com don't have the same layout, I assume (I forced the script to execute itself on every *.imdb.com/* websites and it didn't work).

You should open a ticket on Greasyfork asking for a mobile compability and see what drhouse thinks about it.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING.

what does it work on as i use firefox.?
I just arrived here tonight after finding out about the MB and boy am i pissed.
IMDB was constantly abused by film crew up voting so i would always check the boards first before deciding on a movie. now instead of asking our opinion they decide to remove it. The only reason i will go back there is to score everything i see a 1 and hopefully when more and more start doing so till they may take the hint and put the boards back but for me im done with them this place is much more honest

reply

Hum, I guess you're free to do whatever you want with the ratings but I don't think scoring everything at 1 is the solution. People around here are still using IMDb as a rating system you know... But anyway!

This script works perfectly with Firefox. First, install Greasemonkey (it's an extension). Then, go to the script page and click the green "Install this script" button.

Then a Greasemonkey pop-up will appear, wait a few seconds and click "install" (or "OK", I don't remember). And you're done!

Message boards will be back at the bottom of every IMDb pages :-)

cheers for the help.
I get other people still use imdb but as i said often people will sign up a few months before a movie and as a first review give it a 10 despite everyone else giving it a low score which often is blatant as once it is scored more it drops to a low rating. Its pretty much the same as spamming a movie but now without the boards we have no way to know if the good ratings are real. imdb will continue to ignore the fact people want them back but they would not ignore constant bad ratings making their scores useless the other option being score everything 10.
its pretty bad they never consulted the users about what they wanted

reply

IMDb ratings system is flawed, sure, but it always has been.

Anyway I think expecting them to bring back the boards is wishful thinking. They don't care. If they did they would have never shut them in the first place.

I don't think there really is a way to show IMDb you're unhappy by still using their website. A few people ranking everything at 1 is meaningless. And you'll always have some fanboys ranking at 10/10. Perfect balance.

It's a "love them or leave them" situation.

By using this script we're still with IMDb. If you really don't want that TMDb is a nice place! They have series and movie boards, Travis (dev) is reactive. It's a great website.

But right now, what we're doing here by using MovieChat, linking to IMDb pages on top on every board, using this script... We're just letting go. Saying "fine, let use down, we'll find a way". And we did, and it's working.

Everything's fine now, no need to deal with resentment anymore :-)
