Can A College Student Watch Drag Shows?

Apparently, the answer is "no, he can't."

“The First Amendment does not prevent school officials from restricting ‘vulgar and lewd’ conduct that would ‘undermine the school’s basic educational mission’ — particularly in settings where children are physically present,” Kacsmaryk, an appointee of former President Donald Trump, wrote last year.

(This is "West Texas A&M" University In Canyon, Texas, near Amarillo.)

I DON'T KNOW...CAN THEY?

reply

Not on the campus of West Texas A&M University.

I suppose some freshmen in their first semester of college might still be 17 and, legally, minors, but there are undoubtedly more "immoral" things to see at most R-rated movies.

reply

R rated movies are rated R.

Drag shows are usually rated X.

Pretending that drag shows aren't pornographic is disingenuous. And "freedom of speech" doesn't protect obscenity.

This is a university, and the average age of a student here is apparently 26. So this has nothing to do with "muh children".

And no, not all drag performances are pornographic. They can be raunchy, but that's not the same as pornographic.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FmTHPfvr1ow A drag queen literally introduced the Queen in the UK to a family audience, over 20 years ago. Stop being prudish.

reply

Why would I as an American care what some Queen does? My national identity was literally founded by rejecting such nonsense!

And what does any of this have to do with the school being able to restrict drag shows on campus? Shouldn't they have a right to autonomy on their campus?

I hardly see the educational or even cultural value in wasting student funds to host drag shows. Tuition is too much as it is.

The point is that not all drag-related culture is pornographic. Not by a long-shot.

reply

Age of consent in Texas is 17.

So a boy, on his 17th birthday, can hang out at the student union with all sorts of different colored bandanas in all of his pockets (maybe 20 pockets if he has one of those travel/photographer/fisherman's vests) and do all sorts of dirty dirty things with 50ish philosophy professors, but he can't watch a drag show.
