Griner is an Olympic Gold medalist, and Whelan is some guy who was discharged from the Marines for grand larceny.
Why are these cases even mentioned in the same breath?
I've had people even here on MovieChat ridicule me for not supporting whelan JUST because he was a marine, despite the fact that the people ridiculing me were apparently blindly supporting him because they weren't aware of the larceny he'd perpetrated while IN the marines which resulted in him being dishonorably discharged.
Add to that the fact that years ago a guy who was on active duty in the Army at the time stole thousands of dollars from me and a group of other people with a fraudulent group buy on some auto parts over the internet then ran off with the money never to face any consequences.
It is for these and other reasons that I never bought into the whole "patriotic", "thank you for your service" charade of blindly praising people JUST because they are/were in the military. That's not to say that I don't personally know members of the military who HAVE served honorably, but just because a person wears, or wore a uniform doesn't automatically mean they've actually earned special treatment.
So yeah, I'll support Griner based on what were obviously "trumped up" russian charges, when compared to a guy who disgraced the uniform of the military of his country (and who was then doing who knows WHAT else while in russia on "business") ANY day.
MAGAts simply mindlessly regurgitate right-wing talking points. Plus tRump had 2 years to get Whelan freed and did nothing about it.

There are at least a couple of threads right here on MovieChat where people were complaining about picking Griner...for the usual non-factual reasons I'd seen in other areas of the internet where people were complaining about Griner being picked - many of those "reasons" which conveniently ignored the fact that russia wasn't even offering whelan as an option in their trade, or, that the chosen leader of the people doing the complaining had two years when he was president to work with russia regarding whelan, did nothing, and only started expressing concern for whelan after he lost and someone else was in charge and the Griner deal was being made.
