Since this after-party is located on the politics board, the first reel I'll load into the projector is JFK.

This film, released at the end of 1991, is one of the more divisive Oliver Stone pictures. In my opinion, this is his best work. It gets a little tinfoil-hatty, but that's exactly what I wanted out of this movie. If you're going to make a film that chronicles the event that has arguably spawned more conspiracy theories than any other in American history, you have to go down those tangents to really do it justice.

Obviously this film isn't a documentary, and its approach to truth is very Stonian, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find a more compelling political thriller. The acting is phenomenal in the movie, from one of the best ensembles ever if you ask me. I've always been a Costner guy, and his Jim Garrison is such a rich character that really gives him a chance to showcase what he can do.

What do y'all think about JFK? How do you feel about Oliver Stone? Where do you rank this among his filmography?

reply

Even though we were really sleepy after the director's cut of JFK, we all agreed we couldn't resist watching All the President's Men.

What did you think? I really like this movie.

If you like political films, then I suggest you check out the films of Francesco Rosi. One of his films (in Italian, obviously) from 1963 features a business man-turned politician (played by Rod Steiger) who is very similar to Trump.

These films are a good introduction into Italy's "Years of Lead" in the 1970s, a period which is surprisingly similar to the times we are experiencing now in America, and, I'm afraid, where we may end up.

Salvatore Giuliano (1962) is a classic Italian film about the Sicilian mafia. The Mattei Affair (1972) and Illustrious Corpses (1976) are also worth checking out.

Here are some links.. do as you see fit (cough, cough):

Thanks for the recommendations. I like Italian films so I'll check these out.

Spy thrillers are pretty good. I liked the Bourne series, at least the first 3 films. Jack Ryan films were my jam for a while, again the first 3 films. The Jack Ryan show on Amazon is very good, although I've only watched the first season so far.

In the Line of Fire (1993)

Clint had a very good early 90s. John Malkovich is so good in this movie, one could easily overlook the hero, but please don't. I think this is my favorite Clint since The Man with No Name or Josey Wales. Unforgiven was also quite the movie, but this is the one I always watch when I want Clint Eastwood, and I want him now!

Bulworth (1998)

I never really liked this movie. Is it worth revisiting? I'm sort of neutral on Warren Beatty.

reply

I actually just re-watched this the other night, I had only seen it once before as a teen not knowing anything about politics and thought it was alright. It has not held up that well, Warren Beatty has several cringe inducing moments and the direction by Beatty doesn't suit the subject matter, it just feel's off for most of it's runtime.

I re-watched Primary Colors with John Travolta recently too and that film holds up much better and is definitely worth a re-watch. Amazing cast with a stand out performance from Kathy Bates that's both hilarious and heart breaking.

reply

I haven't seen Primary Colors, but I will add it to my list.

I remember liking this movie, but I haven't watched it since it was first released.

reply

One of the few Stone movies I haven't watched, I had completely forgot about it until I saw your post. Definitely watching this flick in the near future.

reply

This one was interesting because of when it was released. It's a little weird having a movie sort of sum up a presidential administration right at the tail-end of it. I do remember liking it, but I was pretty much on board with the idea of W as a doofus at that point.
