TV movie - depressed kid, kills rabbit

I'm curious about a movie I saw as a kid. Probably a TV movie, sort of an afterschool special-feel, about a disturbed teenage or pre-teen boy. He takes the class rabbit home and kills it, burying it in the back yard. He later tries to commit suicide. Very sad movie. Anyone remember this?

I have never seen it. Could it be this, a 1987 telefilm called "Family Sins"?

This was the most detailed description I could find, matching your description about a sad boy given a rabbit from school:

I think that's probably it, thanks! Great research job! I had forgotten that part of the plot was that he let his little brother drown.

And thanks for the welcome. My "misspent" youth watching movies and TV means I have little bits of trivia and random scenes floating around in my head just collecting dust.

That trivial stuff may seem like time killed but you never know when you might be on 'Jeopardy!' or some other gameshow. Plus, it's a great conversation starter like what we're glued to right now. I'll see you when I'll see you. I'll be glad to help you whenever I can, just give me a holler. Nice to meet you.

Try 'Ordinary People' too.

I can't remember the title but there is an episode of Hammer House of Horror with that in the story. A couple adopt a young boy to replace their son who died, the dad was a lab scientist with white rabbits in cages that he experimented on at their house .
