There is a part in it where a teenage boy is running toward the back of his house at a pretty good pace. He believes the glass patio door is open, but, it is not and he crashes thru it, a chunk of glass lodges in his throat and he dies in front of his family.
I'm guessing late '90's, perhaps even further into the decade. I saw it twice, promised myself I'd write it down and it got away from me.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have not seen this movie, but I know it's based on the short story "White Angel" by Michael Cunningham which he then turned into the novel A Home.
The short story is almost as you described. I read it in school years ago.
