Good director or overrated?

reply

Oscars~SHIT

reply

Overrated. Only two or three that are okay, definitely not great.

reply

He reminds me a lot of John Carpenter; both very distinguishable visual styles/atmospheres and diverse careers with tons of ups and downs, mostly towards the ends of their careers. I love Carpenter but I couldn't see many of his movies, even his best ones, nabbing Oscars outside of technical nominations (effects and makeup, mostly).

The only movie Carpenter made with an Oscar nom was Starman, for acting. Vampires was shortlisted for cinematography, makeup, the musical score, and best actor (James Woods). Pretty similar to De Palma. The Untouchables is the closest thing he made to a big Oscar winner. Even movies I love, like Blow Out, weren't the kind of movies to bring home Oscars.

reply

Carpenter never stood a chance. He doesn't make Oscar-baity movies like that.

reply

I do not think he deserves an Oscar for any of his work.

EDIT: lol, I see I already responded to this thread a month ago. Just shows you how memorable this guy is to me.

reply

Heisenberg responded to this today two comments below, but also responded three responses above 3 months ago.

reply

3 months is not as bad as 1 month.☚ī¸

reply

One time I responded to someone here who asked which Batmobile was best. The next week I started a topic asking the exact same thing.

😘

To be fair the Razzies have been stupid in the past. For instance Rambo First Blood Part 2 winning worst picture and worst actor. That movie was not bad! Also Brian DePalma was nominated for a Razzie for Scarface which is also pretty stupid. And this is coming from someone who didn't like Scarface that much.

reply

They also gave Kubrick a Razzie nomination for The Shining.

reply

Now that's bullcrap! What a pack of fools!

reply

They also nominated Ennio Morricone for The Thing.

reply

I know. The Thing was too hated when it came out.

reply

WHO in his right mind GIVES A FLYING FUCK about oscars or other idiotic crap like that when talking about art???????????

reply

No need to be mad about it.

reply

It's true though, the Oscars are stupid

reply

Depends. I disagree with them a lot, but that means they also disagree with me.

reply

Well, ok but you are judging a major director based on the fucking people choice awards.
How many statuettes have they given to Leonardo or Van Gogh or Bach?

Fucking barbie will have a nomination for that crap and some wins.
Get real.

reply

I didn't judge him at all. I asked if he was a good director or if he was overrated. He's a respected director but only seems to get negative awards.

reply

Samoanjoes, you asked if he was a good director or if he was overrated with the premise of his awards as a factor to consider.

I am telling you that, to judge his greatness as a director, his awards are as important as the number of hair on his ass.

reply

This reminds me of a time on Instagram where someone said Meryl Streep was overrated. Some woman got upset and responded to him "how is she overrated when she's won 3 Oscars, 3 Emmys and 8 Golden Globes?" The guy responded "that's exactly what makes her overrated."

reply

Ahah.
I instead completely disregard any "competition" in arts, it's as retarded as playing a competitive game without keeping the score and then giving a prize to everyone, so everybody is a "winner".

reply

OK, you don't put much stock in awards. Your opinion of Brian De Palma? Do you think he was a great director?

I recently watched Blow Out. My second viewing. I had not seen it in many years. One of John Travolta's best performances.

Scarface.

Brian gets a thumbs up from me.

reply

De Palma is a great director.
I have two gripes with him:
1- his homages were too often just rip offs.
2- the second half of his career has been lazy and a letdown. He could and should have done better.

PS: it's not that "I" don't put much stock in awards.
It's that they don't belong to the art world.

reply

He's one of the very few directors who made iconic films in THREE separate decades(Carrie 70's, Scarface 80's, Carlito's Way 90's).

He flipped off Charlie Rose in an interview because Charlie would not stop hassling him about Bonfire.

Brian De Palma is a Fucking legend.

reply

I like to call it Bonfire of the Panties.

reply

I agree eb.
