The movie isn't as bad as many make it out to be. The acting is decent and it plays straight. It isn't cheesy or lowbrow entertainment. It just seems like it was made by amateurs who did the best job they could with limited ability. If you think the title "Revenge" has to do with Ellen's revenge on the shark for killing Sean then the plot is a little more plausible. That would be like saying, why does an angler need to go hiking and fishing on some remote mountain river? He can just go to the supermarket and get some fish. We would have no way of related to their motivations. Daniel was trained by the YMCA at that point. His kicking ability as good enough for Miyagi to instantly recognize it as karate and not him training for soccer or even muay thai. Daniel's tournament victory is highly questionable and Johnny was feeling conflicted when Daniel took advantage, but I digress. Their next real fight was when Daniel assumed Johnny was hurting Samantha, rather than allowing her and his own estranged son a place to sleep off their big mistake in a safe way. Johnny whooped Daniel clearly. Johnny defeated Daniel at the beach, in his apartment. Daniel only won in a tournament with rules. Whenever it was for real, Johnny always won. Also, I think Tatsu would be less forgiving of Daniel's temperament than Miyagi. "You mean in a boxing match where opponents are there to do exactly that to each other?" I suppose you have a point. Mike Tyson said he was going to do unspeakable things to Lennox Lewis and despite almost winning, Tyson didn't actually follow through with his comments. "Also, if Barnes and Snake really believed Daniels threat to kill them would they have pulled him up, or just threw him the rope and scarpered?" Absolutely they did. That is why Snake demanded the tree as an insurance policy. Clubber Lang said he was going to beat Rocky like a dog, and he did just that. "Threatens the lives of opponents. Really? Fuck off!" So saying Mike Barnes and Snake are "dead!" in a seriously angry and threatening tone isn't threatening lives? He literally said they are "dead." There is no ambiguity there. I'll take this response as conceding defeat. None of my points are refutable. Miyagi-Do, as Daniel practices it, relies on deception, cheapshots, and psychology. Deception: Appear weak by groveling. Evidence: Daniel on his hands and knees before Chozen at the club. Daniel during his match with Barnes. Cheapshots: Low blow on Chozen. Hosing down Johnny and Cheap shotting Johnny when Johnny tried to end their confrontation peacefully. Too many more to name. Psychology: Threaten the lives of his opponents in an attempt of intimidation. Appear to be weak so they can let their guards down just long enough for him to get a quick point. Was there ever a more face palming moment than when Daniel actually tried to convince Miyagi that he was doing sit ups in bed? This is Daniel we are talking about. He is as the Foghorn Leghorn describes his own love interest. https://youtu.be/eNAtGmQ6i3o Was Daniel really that dumb to think anyone would fall for his story? Yes. Or did Daniel actually make it a habit of catching up on his sit ups while in bed which accounted for his fatness? It is quite possible. He was able to perform a few situps, which indicates there is some muscle memory going on. Maybe he is watching the World Cup? Imagine a sports reporter interviewing people on the way out. Someone would say, "It was a total sham. I thought the mob left youth sports alone, but apparently they don't. I saw an out of shape clown come out of nowhere and was allowed to fight in the championship round fully rested. I just don't get it. We all saw who the real champion is. This is the biggest sports scandal since the Black Sox. Is this the black belt scandal? The good people of the valley pay good money to see world class karate and this is the show we get? There was better officiating in last night's pro wrestling show. At least those refs have integrity." The officiating in the All-Valley made pro wrestling officiating look like a beacon of integrity. As did many who fought in that war. Not to mention, Silver came from a rich and privileged family. He could have easily gotten out of serving in the army, but he showed tremendous courage to serve. To further show shades of gray, it should be revealed somehow that Silver saved Daniel's father's life in the war. Not only that, but he would stop the match immediately and declare the aggressor as the winner. The honorable Mr. Silver would never simply dump toxic sludge into random areas of Borneo. He used "dump" as a general common-man expression for a highly sophisticated disposal process. The person he was talking to would not understand such jargon, so Silver had no reason to explain it as such. You are forgetting that Mr. Silver is a philanthropist and a humanitarian. He even literally risked his life for a war that wasn't justified just so he could serve his country. The same reason why in Star Trek II project Genesis needed a dead planet. They didn't want to destroy the chance of life eventually evolving. That same way cheating on ones taxes puts extra money in their pocket.
