Very true. This film really makes me think of OJ Simpson and how he had gotten away with so much before the double homicide. For some reason, I have always found it hilarious that something terrible always happens after this dude randomly shows up lol Oh, don't get me wrong - I also regard it is being a great film with a ton of timeless elements to it all; the bits that I found to be bizarre are all bits that I have zero issue with, they are just surreal and hilarious in a very unique way lol I mean, John Huston has always reminded me of my late paternal Grandpa due to the physical resemblence and his all around deep thinking yet jovial demeanor. So yeah, that is most likely why Cross really scares the shit out of me once it is revealed that he is the villain lol. I am willing to bet that lots of folks out there share this opinion of the ending and the character of Noah Cross. I mean, the most effective and well-written/well-portrayed villains are the ones who initially seem to be very charismatic and polite, it makes the gut-punch reveal land twice as hard Director - Clint Eastwood Jake Gittes - Alden Ehrenreich Evelyn Mulwray - Emily Meade Noah Cross - Scott Glenn .....and James Bond as well. (Jack Vincennes) I think this line was included to primarily establish Noodles as being a cynic's cynic who often hides his emotions behind his abrasive personality
