Where does one get the outtakes?
Spoken like a typical uninformed brainwashed liberal product of our "modern" education system that reeks of revisionist history and blames the entire US white population for all sins past present and future.
Start with learning the context of Jolson's work and what he did for black american actors back in the day, otherwise take your hate somewhere else, it is not welcome here
Interesting remarks about lip-synching. The Ave Maria is ALSO lip-synched because the on-screen kid actor is Scotty Beckett, who later went on to be Winky on Rocky Jones (which I saw while growing up) but the singing was an unseen young man named Rudy Wissler, thus paralleling the main points about Jolson and Parks.
Also, remarks about Jolson being fat? He is IN the movie doing the long shot on the runway singing and dancing Swanee because no one else could do it and he insisted. Yes, he was older, but he wasn't in that bad a shape considering all he had gone through up to them including a collapsed lung from doing USO shows, etc.
My father's favorite movie, so I grew up with seeing it on Million Dollar Movie, but later in the day on the east coast. Oddly, it would be years before I saw the sequel, which has all the painfully consistent details explaining how parks is playing parks and playing jolson taking to parks and height adjustments, etc.
Also, it's curious they have William Demerest from My Three Sons as "Steve Martin" [and no banjo in sight].
I read your nice review, and that brings up the point that a lot of recent disk-based releases are crap. Since the movie is low quality to start with, let it at least be complete and not chopped off in various ways all avoidable.
Lastly, the star of the movie is Victor Killian, [uncredited!] who was later to find fame followed by death as "the Fernwood flasher" on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. Due to the new lease on his career while living in a crappy cheap home because he had so little money, he was mugged and died as a result of the attack. Sad.
