I liked The Counselor in a fascinated, detached way, and I've seen it a couple times But I still don't know if the Sinaloan cartel is behind half the killings, or if it's ALL the Cameron Diaz character. In any case, Cormac McCarthy writes some dark stuff. Between this and No Country For Old Men, he has one dark vein in him. Sean Penn is appropriately intense, as always. But nothing happens... yes, (spoiler) they had a big accident, but then... there is nothing to be interested in. Maybe when they reconstitute it will improve. The only thing duller than that show is this discussion. I agree that there are some moments, especially with Evan Rachel Wood, but it's not enough. Compare it to The Americans or Get Shorty. This is not in their league. It's a TV show. It's not my job to pay that close attention. I'm a writer/director and I don't get lost easily. If I'm lost it's because I'm bored. As I say, season 1 was great and this is a disappointment. The concept was cool in 1973 in the theater, and it was well done last year with additional characters added to the mix. This year is all noise and meaningless action. The writers are completely lost and are resorting to shoot-'em-ups instead of surprises and revelations. Different strokes. Yeah, that about says it. I think we were spoiled by Season 1. Totally "Alienation" -- it's as clear as day, but that pic gets no acknowledgment -- go figure. Try "Heaven Can Wait." Beatty is genuinely funny, even touching.
