The only reason they did notice a smell was because of the shotgun blast breaking the wall and hitting one of the bodies, breaking the seal, releasing the stench.
Yeah, the first few episodes were okay, but then the show suddenly focused almost solely on anything Mariko while Blackthorne did literally nothing but still stumble over his bad manners, lack of Japanese and shitty mood while asking for his fucking ship every episode. Thrilling.

When people started calling the show Shegun, I initially thought they overreact. Well they did not. This is Shegun. Mariko was ultimately the center of everything and the show wasted even more valuable time and sacrificed other good sub plots and scenes from the book and original for the whole Ochiba nonsense.

I'd like to add that to this day, it rubs me the wrong way that the sole focus of the holocaust is on the Jews and almost exclusively so. At best, you read short remarks about other groups targeted, like Roma and Sinti, but you rarely if ever read what really matters.

It's always just "6 Million Jews" which is absurd because almost the same amount of Soviet non-Jewish civilians were murdered as well, let alone all the people from other groups.
While Jews were the largest individual group targeted, ultimately more gentiles and other groups were victims of the holocaust than Jews.

The absolute majority of victims were killed inside these camps, around 4 of the 6 Million.
However, many of them did die of starvation or the side effects that come along with it - but that still happened inside these camps.
Where do you think the majority of victims starved? In the wilderness?
It's not far fetched, but from all historical estimations, this is indeed on the higher end.
First of all, the number 6 Million is not written in stone as a definite number, it is the accepted estimate and the true number, we will probably never know at this point. Methods used to acquire these numbers range from census counts and calculations to individual research to witness testimony.
There have been multiple noteworthy attempts to determine a precise estimation and from those "generally accepted", the estimations range from 5.1 to 6.2 Million, most of them coming to the conclusion of around 5.9 Million - hence "6 Million" is the accepted number used today (and for decades now).
People saying "6 Million Jews were murdered in the camps!" are wrong, however, as roughly 2 Million of them were murdered outside of such camps by other means.
I don't see how the critically acclaimed 1980s Shogun is so disappointing.

Usually the case and I do want to read it some day, I am just a terrible reader of books, as my attention always drifts off spinning m,y own little sub stories and conversations while reading, which is frankly exhausting. And audio books put me to sleep, unfortunately. When I struggle to sleep, I fire up Crime and Punishment. Why take medication, if you can have Dostoyevsky... which sounds demeaning, but that's not my intent.
That's why I prefer visual entertainment, among other reasons.
And as great as the book might be - the 1980s show is objectively really good. Not perfect, what it is, but it sure works for me. Reading the book now, it might just spoil my love for that show.
