Why did they stick around if they had all been tortured?

The man who looked after the chickens had had the rice treatment in the past. Did they allude to what caused this?

Mary and the maid could have just eloped. They touched on it at one point but I obviously missed why they didn't entertain this option.

I thought this is a very well acted and well made gothic story. Starts off bleak and carries on throughout.

Wouldn't watch it again but I enjoyed it.
