Affected pronunciation of “pulpit”

The elders in Patrice’s now-former church speak about the “pull-pit,” with which they teased Patrice in order to get her daughter’s money. Then they denied Patrice their implied invitation to speak from the pulpit because she is a woman, so must submit to men (which her daughter does, and for which the “righteous” church condemns the daughter, while gleefully accepting her largess. Side note: not all Christian churches are like this, and I am Christian.) It strikes me how affected this pronunciation is, particularly given Author Katori Hall’s precise use of language. The word is “PUL-pit.” Period, exclamation point, skyrockets. “Pull-pit” is distinctly Masterbatory, the pit into which the male church elders squirt the fruit of their bitty pulls.
