Characters dying...?

They have, so far, let the audience deduce two important deaths: Jason Bateman's character, and the mother of little boy who was murdered. I mean, it looked like Maitland was grazed by the bullet in the neck. Next thing we hear is "sorry for your loss." And the mother of the little but they show a sad family standing in some sort of hospital. I thought she had some sort of breakdown.

Not saying they need to hold your hand and announce it, but not clear for quite some time.
