Season 4 Update: Lucasfilm Exec's Cryptic Response Hints The Show Isn't Over

In speaking with Ash Crossan (via Mandoverse Updates), Filoni responds to the question of The Mandalorian season 4 no longer happening by saying, "there's so much spinning in the galaxy right now" and adding that he's not the type to "commit to one thing." He also comically adds that "no mind trick works on me," proving that Filoni will only directly answer this question when the right time arrives. This is certainly a cryptic response, but his refusal to provide an outright answer proves that, at bare minimum, The Mandalorian season 4 is still a strong possibility.

Filoni also discussed The Mandalorian & Grogu itself, mentioning his excitement about continuing to work with his recent Star Wars collaborator Favreau, who's set to direct the upcoming Star Wars movie. It's important to note that he specifies this movie as "what we're doing right now," likely hinting that The Mandalorian season 4 would, in fact, happen after the movie rather than before. Still, none of the possibilities for The Mandalorian season 4 are being discounted, and this is more than likely Filoni's - and Lucasfilm's - true intention.

Lucasfilm and Filoni remaining tight-lipped on the fate of The Mandalorian season 4 is, in the words of Din Djarin himself, the smart move. This allows them the freedom to make whatever choice they see fitting either following or preceding The Mandalorian & Grogu movie, which is something Filoni hints with the way he emphasizes his hesitance to commit to any one decision. Clearly, Din Djarin's and Grogu's story is ready for the big screen, but Lucasfilm is aware of how much they still need this duo for success on the small screen as well.

With The Mandalorian & Grogu set to begin production later this year, it's even more difficult to tell what Lucasfilm's ultimate decision on The Mandalorian season 4 will be. Should it precede the spin-off movie, production would need to start very soon, and it would require a lot of both its cast and its crew. If it's done after the movie, then it could end up overlapping with Ahsoka season 2, which could be problematic given the shared Volume soundstage. Regardless, it seems Filoni is helping The Mandalorian viewers to keep the flame of hope alive that season 4 will arrive in due time.
