I'm shocked by how much Amazon has improved

For so long the vast majority of Amazon's original tv show output looked to me like shows that were simply made to be ignored. Wimpering and cheap efforts to emulate what the likes of HBO seem to achieve so effortlessly. Tacky rip offs, cliches or unnatural dialogue interactions were rife. Even their "critically acclaimed" shows felt like an unengaging bore, while their few new shows that actually were great tended to be bought from other channels.

The few times I had indulged in one of their efforts had made me increasingly weary. But the surprising surge in quality demonstrated by other recent shows like Homecoming, The Boys and their takeover of The Expanse led me to taking a risk with Undone. An obscure and uniquely interesting looking prospect that, given Amazon's history of handling such material, could have been an absolute disaster. But it's a hidden gem. It's visually, arresting, rotascoped animation style effectively merging the dreamy sureal with the everyday. It's characters and dialogue feel natural.

Amazon seem to have learned to spend their money on taking risks but actually using artists who are competent, know what they're doing and have a genuine vision. Rather than the lame alternative you go to when you can't find anything on Netflix, they seem to have developed into a genuine rival.
