How long should a movie wait before it tells you the basic story idea?

We were 26 minutes into this one and I said, well, we gave them well over 20 minutes and they still haven't clued us in or shown us anything interesting, so let's stop. Later on I just turned it on in the background and two minutes later they finally let the shoe drop. Asking a little much I thought.
