Dominiques predicament?

When he explained his situation to Nadine and her bf it made sense. However, I didn't ever hear him say that he had ever considered approaching the French embassy. And why wouldn't he have tried that? I know he didn't have a passport, so it could be difficult for him proving his citizenship without it, but he could have tried to explain it. Or did I miss something? I thought that's what the main purpose of embassies and consulates is, to provide support and consultation to their respective citizens, under difficult circumstances.

My guess: he didn’t have faith that the system could get him out before the killers returned. Too much red tape to wade through. You said it: “provide support and consultation.” They would not have protected him during the time it would have taken to issue him a new passport— and that is exactly what they would have done. Strictly by the book. There’s no way they would have helped him “fix” his current passport the way Nadine did. That would be illegal, and way beyond providing “support and consultation.” Look at all the difficulties Hermann had just trying to get consuls to care about it. (Particularly because they were all hippie types, “long hairs.”)

Plus he believed he was being watched.
