What's up with all the women fawning over Steve Zahn's character?

Just finished the second episode. I'm not sure what the real-life guy that Steve Zahn is playing was like, but if he's anything like the bloated, neurotic, disheveled character that we see on screen then I can't for the life of me wonder why women would constantly fawn over him.

The guy is kind of disgusting and yet there's always some female looking at him lustily and licking her lips. WTF?

It's hard for me to believe this has some basis in reality, and yet it's such a big part of the story that it doesn't seem like the kind of thing they'd just make up.
