Who did you empathize with more?

I tended to empathisize with Charlie (Adam Driver) a bit more than Nicole (Scarlett Johansson).

She was the first to get a lawyer involved even though they both agreed to try and divorce amicably without one. This was a big cause of the bitterness that ensued.

It also seemed Charlie was more flexible and calm, while Nicole seemed more atagonistic and demanding. She could have talked to Charlie about the issues that were on her mind directly with him first rather than having him hear them through the aggressive and vengeful lawyer (Laura Dern).

One last thing, at the beginning when they were supposed to read aloud what they had liked about each other in the counselor's office, Nicole absolutely refused to read hers even though Charlie was willing to and to go first. I think it would've gone a long way in helping their marriage or at least soften the split since it might've taken the bitterness away.
