Was Henri involved with Helene?

Another thing about this movie I'm curious about, was the reaction of Helene when they find out Henri is to marry Marie. It seemed like Marie was surprised, Helene was crushed. Was Henri in a relationship, or was it assumed he would be with the sister Helene before he decided to arrange to marry Marie?
