What is the deal with killers, hit men/women, assassins, whatever?

Do we get sick of this problem-childish stuff at some point. Why is our entertainment so repetitive and brain dead, and why when it is pointed out do viewers get so defensive ... like it isn't true? Forget influencing social media, Hollywood has hollowed out a lot of American brains.
