What was the aftermath of season 1?

At the start of season 1 we see that the former judge has been sent to prison. Of what was he convicted? How much of what occurred was revealed? Because at the end of season 2, we find out that a lot of people involved don't know even the basics of what he had done and what had happened. Either this information came out and he was convicted for it or it didn't and he should not have been in prison. Seems like the second season writers were different from those of season 1. Wonder if it was meant to be a one and done series and then they decided to make a sequel and had to mess with the plot in order to make it work.
