At least it was better than the 2nd half of the 1990 miniseries

I always have to fast-forward the opening scene involving the gay couple being brutally attacked by those asshole homophobic teens and one of them getting thrown off a bridge (since there's no justice for that horrible travesty, unlike in the novel) but the rest of the movie was so much better than the majority of the adult portion of the 1990 miniseries. For one, the soap opera melodrama crap is gone and I'll gladly take the "Judd Apatow" dark humor over that shit, any day. The 2016 time frame being updated from the outdated 1990 one is much better looking. Although I found the fortune cookie scene in the miniseries a lot scarier than in this one.

The adult actors were much better casted this time and actually look a lot like the dopplergangers of the child actors, where in the miniseries, they couldn't even get that right. Also, Eddie's death looked way more convincing than in the miniseries where he could've easily survived that attack. Seriously, that was very bad. The miniseries didn't even try. Also, in this version; the part where Beverly had to deal with her abusive asshole husband, at least didn't look like something ripped out of a shitty Lifetime movie from the late 80/early 90s.
