Why they didn't use the second Phoenix gem for a separate visitation spell?

I really loved the movie. But couldn't they just wait until the current 'messed up' spell wears off and then try to bring their dad back using the second gem?

No, because it was a one-time thing, like is stated in the spell. They already used their chance by initiating it that day.
