maudlin - that's the word that comes to mind

overly sentimental
overly emotional

I know a lot of movies push the envelope - they want the viewer to 'feel' - but in this case it just felt extremely fake to me. The true story itself is interesting, but they just pushed the characters' emotions too far, thus most of it just felt fake, big time. Great movies make you forget you're watching a movie - in this case, I never forgot.
