Period Music and Their Lyrics are important to the series?

Every time I hear each and every song used within the series I wonder if the lyrics introduced with the scene are that important. I've enjoyed all of the songs and have been introduced to cuts that I have never heard before in my life but they work so well with the scene.

Are they too meta?
