S4 will be its last

and it will air 2022

Let’s hope it’s better than S3. With S3, the writer put the storyline and characters in a corner with no way out and there’s no way to write them back (Kenny, Niko, Mo, Irina). And I hope they once and for all really figure out what to do with the relationship of Villanelle and Eve. A fascination is fine in the beginning but a romantic relationship - that should never happen. The case of Niko for one says no. It will probably be a No Time to Die ending.

All shows do this so they won't get cancelled -- but then they don't have any bullets left.

And Comer did the movie star pivot as well.

Not sure what you mean. Bad writing ended this series. Do what so they won’t get canceled?
Comer could mix schedules for film and TV if Killing Eve was still good. She was bound to get noticed. That wasn’t the problem. I think S3 was so bad that the direction the writer took put the characters, what’s left of them, in a place they can’t get out of.

They can't afford to spread things out, so they use up devices/situations early in order to get renewed. That leaves fewer story options going forward. Where do you go once you bring them together so early? They're just recycling the same beats now -- bring them together, blow them apart, repeat. If you knew you were going to be on the air for 4 seasons, you can build things up differently -- but they don't.

And Comer's rise may contribute to an ending if she says she only wants to do one more season, being that she's already doing major film roles, and her role here not having much meat left on its bones. People move on to new things in their acting careers, and it's not uncommon for a tv series to be a launchpad. She's done three films already, with another on the way (with Ridley Scott again).

What devices/situations did they do in S3 to get renewed?

Introduced new character(s) (including a significant one played by a recognizable actress), a new assassin, two mystery deaths (for which V is initially thought to be behind to reboot the vibe from the first season), and a backstory detour trip down memory lane for V (b/c they don't know what to do with her any longer -- b/c they've done it all already.) Of course it wasn't nearly as effective, which is why neither of us liked it as much, the ratings dipped, and a final season was announced. There's nothing to do but end it. All they did with this season was blow apart the characters before bringing them all back to the same spot. Something has to give b/c the dynamic is played out.

But just imagine if V and Eve had never quite gotten together all this time, and you spread things out, instead of stuffing them in, then repeating them. The scene that ended the first season would make for a nice finale now, but they needed moments like that to juice that first season so it would be renewed. Shows can't afford to hold back when they need to survive. That's why they rarely stick their final season landings, and people say how good a show used to be. You have to do something about The 12, kill some main characters, and resolve their relationship somehow instead of repeating the same steps. They couldn't do those earlier b/c there'd be no show if you did.

Villanelle and Eve’s relationship has reached its limit. V is responsible for Bill’s demise and Niko and no matter how you look it, Eve is never going to be able to see V in the same way she did at the beginning,

What new character was recognizable?

You know that there were different writers for each season. First season introduced the whole series and it was fantastic. S2 was even better with Emerald Fennell passing the baton. S3 it went downhill. I think the standout has alway been Carolyn - Fiona Shaw. V’s creativity is just outstanding and that would have worked for many seasons with different locations. Maybe V should have had other relationships modeled after Anna and not be limited to Eve?

Comer said. “I would rather we ended on a good note and kept our integrity, instead of going on and and being kicked out he door.” That might have been after S2.

"What new character was recognizable?"

Dame Harriet Walter as Dasha. She's on Succession now.
