The architect (Spoiler!)

Is the man in the basement actually the architect that build the house? It seems to me quite logical? Strange that nobody has mentioned this - or am I missing something obvious?

reply

Spoiler too.

No. He’s the husband of the housekeeper who is hiding from loan sharks.

Yes, I know. But what about this:

- The first residents of the house was the architect and his wife.
- The architect went into serious financial problems (bankruptcy, debts etc.)
- In order to escape the creditors, he tricked them into believe he went abroad while he in reality (and literary) went underground.
- His wife stayed overground and became a housekeeper for future residents.

Interesting theory, but I don't think it's true. Not that I believe everything has to be spoon-fed to the audience, but I feel that there would have been at least some subtle comment about the architect going missing, or debts causing him to move out. Also, while I've only seen the film once, I seem to remember seeing a picture of the architect at one point, and it wasn't the same man.

About the architect mentioned.... “We are informed early on that a famous – entirely fictional – architect, Namgoong Hyeonja, built and lived in the Park’s family home. It’s a clear signal to the audience to pay close attention to the two building’s [sic] design.” The two buildings refer to the Parks’ house and the horrible basement apartment of the Kims. The housekeeper’s husband’s name is Geun-se. So not related.
