Does Kevin Smith even try anymore?

I love Kevin Smith and have been a bit more forgiving for some of his lesser work than most. In fact, I will always stand by the opinion that Red State is a shamefully underrated gem and an excellent thriller. However, Smith's last two films have been awful in every feasible category. Has he just given up?
