Oscar Isaac - spoilers

Such a great actor, exuding charisma and charm, bringing life and depth to his on-screen characters, whoever they may be. The beginning of the movie, set in NYC, about 25% of it with him and Olivia Wilde, with flashbacks involving Isaac and his therapist, played by Annette Bening, was funny and pithy and sometimes over-the-top with Isaac's antics. Even though a hugely pregnant Wilde is run over by an NYC bus and dies, though her baby survives, I still had great hopes for this movie, thinking the critics were all wrong about it.

The next segment, with Isaac insanely grieving over Wilde's death, segues to the prepubescent daughter of Isaac and Wilde mourning her dead mother, but then growing into a late teen, early twenties woman played by Olivia Cooke who, to paraphrase the movie's narrator, "Scares the shit out of everyone." This segment, though not as good as part one, does have its comedic moments, with Cooke being a beautiful though half-untamed animal. It also includes more flashbacks involving Isaac, who has been institutionalized by his grief, and the therapist. So, still okay.

Then it slides downhill into another narrative set in Spain, Spanish with English subtitles, beginning with a posturing Antonio Banderas slowly drawing out a highly reticent worker on his olive oil plantation. That's when the movie lost focus for me, with too many long, slow, drawn-out scenes involving Banderas and the worker and his Spanish wife and young son.

Long story short, you know by then that the worker's son, as a young boy on a visit to NYC with his Spanish parents, is the unwitting cause of Olivia Wilde's death, but will grow up and fall in love with Olivia Cooke, Wilde's untamed animal daughter, and the two lovers will grow together and have a family and blah blah blah until the end when we finally meet the narrator of the story, the granddaughter of Olivia Cooke and the Spanish boy.

So the critics were correct, IMO. At least some of the movie was good, and a 6.9 IMDB score is about right.
