(Part 1) Movie Analysis (spoilers ahead!!)

I rarely watch a movie twice, as I did with this impeccable masterpiece of a film. With some help from my husband, I've come to conclusions about this film that I'd like to share with you. I rarely do such type of in-depth analysis on this site, but there are so many who didn't get the movie, that I think an analysis is appropriate at this time.
The movie is about Will's lack of INTEGRITY, and ultimately HONOUR. That is why he is a hollow shell of a man. Because he has no drive/ ambition, it was easy for sinister external forces to invade his mind and possess it. He was not in full possession of his faculties. He failed to steer in the direction of any larger objective or goals. The fact that his name is Will is highly ironic, because a strong WILL is precisely what he LACKS.

Will does many questionable, and even objectionable, things that lead us to conclude that he is a pathetic excuse for a human being. Here are some things that stood out concerning his character:

1) He had no respect for the fact that Alicia was Jeffrey's boyfriend. He flirted with her right in front of Jeffrey and attempted to steal her away from him (ultimately without success, as we learned at the end of the movie). THIS IS A BIG DEAL. His failure to secure, sustain, and cultivate his relationship with HIS OWN girlfriend speaks volumes about the kind of guy he is. His lack of vision for his relationship with Carrie is key to note here. He is aimless/ directionless, a weather vane blowing in the wind.

2) He was not serious about returning the lost phone back to its owner. He kept putting it off like it wasn't an important thing. I know if I lost my phone, I would be very keen to get it back. Will's lack of care regarding the phone shows that he cares very little about the possessions and travails of others.

3) He is an alcoholic. This is pretty obvious, but important to note. Instead of going through life clear and sober, he numbs his sensations by drowning them in alcohol. Not only that, he lets underage teens drink in his bar. To many this may make him appear "cool", but it is simply an invitation to reckless behaviour. Had he done due diligence, he would have possibly never come across the phone - and we wouldn't be watching this horror movie about him.
Note also that Will encourages those around him to share his drinking habit (ex.: Alicia), when he should take into account her own feelings about drinking too much. He is a bad influence on others in this regard.

4) He lacks the care, and maybe even physical strength, to stop the bar fight that took place under his watch. He was being a spectator than a man of action. This is also very important to note. Will refuses to lay down the law and enforce order. Were it none of his business, this type of behaviour would be understandable, but he is supposed to be in charge - tending the bar.
5) He let a woman roam in the nude in the bar he was tending. He did not think it was inappropriate and did not fear for her safety and vulnerability in a place that men frequent and are patrons of. The woman was clearly irrational, and instead of putting his foot down, he let her carry on playing pool in the nude. The woman could have been attacked or harassed, but nary a care did Will have about this. He should have covered her up, and made her sit in a corner and think about what she was doing - at least.

6) He thought that Garrett's texts asking for help were him joking around. He failed to realize that the guy was in some deep trouble, once again showing that he is not in any way a RELIABLE man - a man you can count on when shit hits the fan. He is not the "take charge" type of guy.

7) He has little to no respect for those who have pursued higher learning (a university/ college education) - his girlfriend and Alicia's boyfriend. He himself dropped out of school. This shows that he lacks the impetus for self-betterment. He would rather play violent video games, perform pointless card tricks, drink, do weed, and chase Alicia, a woman who is emotionally and sexually unavailable. He has no ambitions, beyond working as a bartender at Rosie's. He has no life plan (as mentioned earlier).

8) He has no meaningful relationships. The one with his girlfriend is a sham. Will has no true friends he can turn to for solace and support. He has an inability to develop connections with others, because he secretly harbours delusions of being better than them, and lacks humility. He thinks his mundane existence is okay/ acceptable as opposed to being in dire need of expansion and progress.

9) He is a compulsive liar. He has corrupt intentions, so it makes sense that he will fumble when it comes to speaking his truth. This makes him CONNIVING and UNTRUSTWORTHY.

10) He is a HORRIBLE steward of the bar he works at. Debauchery and cockroaches roam rampant, and he does nothing to stop them. He would rather continue working in squalor than take action to better his surroundings.
