Serena betrayed her gender and country so that SHE could have a baby??

And what Waterford said earlier, that better doesn't mean better for everybody - well, I don't see how this is even better for her. Why would you even want to bring a child into the kind of society they've created...

reply

Yep... she's one selfish bitch, that Serena is.

Well yeah. She's an awful, horrible human being. She knows she's stuck, she knows she majorly effed up by sticking with her husband and his plans, she also knows that *he's* infertile, but she's also a coward, and she's also extremely stubborn and will not admit that she's wrong. At least not until after she loses a finger for reading her beloved Bible. She's also incredibly selfish, and wants to be a mother above anything else. Her warped religious views prevent her from considering any alternatives. She's a very complicated person but she's also terrible. You can see how much she really does love "her" baby, but she's also stubborn to a fault, as she refuses to accept help, and initially refuses to have June return so the baby can eat. You can see her start to come through a little when the Commander is in the hospital, and she seems normal and happy. Then he returns, finds out what she did, and beats her and breaks her again.

I think what she wanted was a return to domesticity and thought she would be part of it as a leader. Not knowing when she opened that door what was really going to happen to women. How men would take it and pervert it and the bible for their own dark needs. She was slowly being edged out of things. While Waterford cooed and soothed her. He knew what was going to happen and her rights would all be taken away. Fred is the real evil one.
